Ceramic lighting brings welcome Winter warmth

These exquisite pieces were created with Italian steline pasta shapes normally reserved for warm winter soups. Naturally ivory in colour the shades can also be stained into a range of striking hues. Liz’s designs are inlaid with a variety of textures and patterns – she takes her inspiration from many areas, anything from grasses or seeds to designs from Indian woodblocks.

Inspired by the British winter nights and late night walks on the beach in Thailand. The translucent porcelain combines with the embossed stars and a gentle light from a candle or integrated lamp to warm up any home or winter table setting.

The star tea light is £75 and lamps start from £380. The lamp is approximately 30 x 16 cm and wired to fit a regular 60 watt bulb. The tea light holder is approximately 13 x 10 cm this particular design forms part of a wider range of bespoke porcelain lighting.

John Lewis’ “Blooming” marvelous collection

Nothing brightens your day quicker than a posy of fresh-picked flowers. Spring has sprung and seasonal blossoms rear their head once again. With the arrival of a new fabric collection from John Lewis, there is no better place to start “blooming” than in your own home.

This Spring/Summer 2010, Nature continues to capture the designers’ imagination at John Lewis. In line with this trend, the new fabric series comprises beautiful floral prints in various styles and colour palettes – from subtle to vibrant, from classic to modern.

Mockie Harrison, Design Manager Home, John Lewis, comments, ‘Our love for nature never seems to wane. Our S/S 2010 Home collection is still driven by all things natural and organic. Florals is one of the key stories, and you will see elements of it across all areas – from fabrics to wallpaper. I love both of our “Classic” and “Contemporary” looks. Whilst remaining harmonious with nature, they interpret the floral theme in two very distinctive ways. The pattern design and the colour palette used for each look strongly exude the relevant feel and mood.’

This season’s signature print, Rosa (£25/m), is key to the “Classic” look. It is a refreshing take on the English rose pattern from the Fifties. Created by the John Lewis Design Studio, Rosa is made from 100% silk and comes in Eau de Nil (top left) and Claret (top right).  Rosa features interlocking roses that are drawn in archetypal Fifties’ colours, but using a more two-dimensional and simplified technique. The result is bolder, brighter and sharper, yet it remains effortlessly elegant and oozes nostalgic beauty and charm. A linen version (£20/m, above left) is also available.

Meanwhile, offering the “Contemporary” look, Wallflower (£20/m) is another highlight of the series created by John Lewis. Taking inspiration from Japanese cherry blossoms, Wallflower brings the fresh scent of Spring florals to your home from the Orient. Its pared-back, simplistic design, combined with a mixture of fresh and warm natural tones, evokes a calming sense of tranquillity and comfort. Wallflower is made of 51% linen and 49% cotton, and comes in three colourways: Honey (below left), Crocus and Pale Catkin (below right).
