God is in the Details

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe famously exclaimed, ‘God is in the details!’ This month Spaces investigates a home which was clearly built with these words in mind.

Stephenson Bell is a celebrated, award-winning architecture practice based in Manchester, UK. Their attention to detail and deft grasp of quality modern design has, among other things, resulted in a previous home feature in Spaces. And now they are back with a new house raising standards of living yet again.

The newly completed residence in Bowden has been dubbed ‘house 784’ by the firm, referring to its actual job number rather than labelling it with an unnecessary moniker (a superfluous embellishment when you have created such an attractive house). But, in contrast to the functional title, this alluring house more than makes up the numbers, standing out in a world of modern design.

Stephenson Bell’s distinctive style could be described as detailed minimalism, but talking to Roger Stephenson (one of two directors of the company) it is clear that he would never allow a ‘house style’ to get in the way of his clients’ needs. ‘It’s an emotional minimalism. I think it is possible to use a limited palette of materials to create a friendly, family house.’

Hollywood Hunk

Friday, November 14th, 2008

With its Mondrian-inspired floating rectangular hunks, this Hollywood home makes a great first impression. But as Emma Hill discovered it’s not until you step inside that the fun really starts.

Set high in the Hollywood Hills, architectural designer Kevin Wickham’s latest project is a sleek modern sanctuary fit for a movie mogul.

The newly constructed home slots neatly into a quiet canyon called the Hollywood Dell, joining a handful of other modern houses in the neighbourhood.

It is outwardly impressive, but it is only when you kick off your shoes and venture inside that you really begin to appreciate the intricacy of Wickham’s design. Not many homes successfully blur the line between the media room and the pool, so you can watch your favourite films from the water, or offer you the security and seclusion of a country retreat in a vibrant, central location, so when you find one that does you can’t help but sit up and pay attention.

Family Gathering

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Fergus McShane investigates a bold new architectural project that invites us to set aside our preconceptions about how a family home should look and function.

Architecture has always had the ability to change the way we live (for obvious reasons). However it’s relatively rare to find a project that fully realises this potential. Therefore when we heard about a home that broke the mould while still retaining all the connotations of close-knit family life we were keen to hear more.

Mulling over the idea of the family home, the conventional image that springs to mind is that of cosy but spacious environs, where a couple and their two point four children can live in harmony. Perhaps the children will then grow up to experience the same family life and start the cycle again. Of course this has not been the ‘norm’ (if it ever was) since the supposedly idyllic ‘50s and the birth of suburbia.

he home itself (like our idea of family) has evolved over time, and the too-good-to-be-true suburban paradise is now a thing of the past, leaving us searching for a more realistic template for family living.

Cut Cost Canyon

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Fergus McShane falls for the considerable charms of Wyoming’s Cornell House, a new-build that proves once and for all that creating the home of your dreams is not about how much money you have, but how you spend it.

Building on a budget can put a strain on any client-architect relationship. Being frugal can often mean having to sacrifice key features and personal touches that otherwise might have transformed a simple house into an architectural project worthy of attention. But the Cornell House is one notable cut-cost exception to the rule that more expensive is always better.

Built by architect Stephen Dynia, the Wyoming residence is a simple but architecturally sound property that has recently garnered welcome recognition from Dynia’s peers and encouraging feedback from the client herself. ‘We have submitted to firm of the year in the Wyoming chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and she (the client) wrote a letter of endorsement’, says Dynia. ‘She’s thrilled with the attention for her house, which works perfectly for the way she planned to use it.’

A Prefab Palace

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Still can’t think of prefab buildings without visions of utilitarian and decidedly un-sexy post-war boxes clouding your vision? This is how Emma Hill felt until she laid eyes on the rather lovely Loblolly House.

For years architects have been championing off-the-shelf housing as a cost and energy efficient solution, but ask the man on the street to describe his dream home and you’ll be waiting a long time to hear the word prefab. Perhaps this is about to change, though, with the advent of a new breed of lovable kit homes which show just how far we’ve come since the early days of prefabs.

Take Loblolly House, for example. Having been constructed miles from its Maryland site and assembled from the platform up in just six weeks it easily holds its own against homes that have been built in a more traditional manner over a far longer time frame.

The 2,200 sq ft family home, which takes its rather unusual name from the loblolly pines that surround it, fits seamlessly into its site, fusing the natural elements of this barrier island into an elegant architectural form. A clever aluminium scaffold system provides both the structural framework for the building and the means of connecting the prefabricated elements using simple tools.

Creature Comforts

Friday, November 14th, 2008

There’s nothing remotely ordinary about this rustic-industrial residence, as writer Sarah Brownlee discovered.

‘It is a bit like a gallery but it’s our home,’ says George Gottl, the co-owner of this ethereal and ever-so-slightly eccentric (in a good way) warehouse apartment in Amsterdam. ‘It’s decorated with art rather than furniture and everything has a meaning.’

Glancing around at the intriguing array of objects and artefacts it’s hard to imagine what the space was like before Gottl and his partner Oliver J.P Michell got their hands on it. Although Gottl manages to paint a wonderfully vivid, and contrastingly spartan, picture: ‘It was owned by a Zen Buddhist,’ he recalls with a detectable hint of amusement. ‘All he had was a futon, a bit of carpet and some bare bulbs and that was about it.’

Gottl and Michell had somewhat loftier ambitions for the space when they took it on. Something to do with the fact that they run their own design studio, known as UXUS, which is conveniently situated just a few blocks away. Michell is an architect, and Gottl has previously worked as creative director for top brands including Nike Apparel and Mandarina Duck. Together they have more than enough skill and experience to pull off a substantial refurbishment.

Putting the Art in Architecture

Friday, November 14th, 2008

It is rare to find an artist whose work has as much kinship with the regular features found in Spaces as Leah Giberson’s. The nature of architecture is the basis of much discussion and debate in our office, so it’s no surprise that Giberson’s architectural artworks piqued our interest.

‘My work falls somewhere between the worlds of photography, painting and collage’, explains Giberson. ‘I am most drawn to seemingly ordinary and mundane scenes, which set a perfect stage for the visually poignant moments that exist all around us, but are often overlooked.’ The subject of Giberson’s work may not be the glamorous architecture we usually feature, but the moments she captures are certainly worth a second look.

‘My paintings often feature isolated houses – tenuously connected to others only by power lines, looming shadows from unknown or unseen sources, awkward or missing architectural elements and empty chairs or abandoned pools waiting as they were left’, says Giberson. ‘There’s often a quiet uneasiness, anxiety and loneliness in many of my paintings, but also a sense of bravery or at least a blind and determined optimism.’

Design Rebel

Friday, November 14th, 2008

This month Spaces was lucky enough to spend a little time with Matteo Alessi, the Managing Director of one of our favourite Italian design companies.

For some time now I have admired Matteo Alessi’s work from afar. As the Managing Director of Alessi (which remains a family-owned company) he has adapted a bold, risk taking strategy, occasionally squeezing profit margins in order to champion less commercial designers and products.

This fearless approach is characteristic of the Alessi family; several generations have revelled in launching pioneering new products that most design companies wouldn’t dare to bring to market, but it has also resulted in the occasional high-profile flop. On rare occasions, the brand has even managed to straddle the dizzy heights of design success while facing fierce criticism simultaneously.

Perhaps the most noteworthy example of a controversial Alessi product launch would be that of Philippe Starck’s Juicy Salif lemon squeezer in 1990. On the plus side, Starck’s design rendered it vaguely possible (if not likely) that you might bandy around the words iconic and lemon squeezer within the same sentence. However, those of a practical bent stubbornly grumbled that a lemon squeezer, no matter how starry, really ought to do a rather better job of facilitating the squeezing of lemons.

Wallpaper… Sort of!

Friday, November 14th, 2008

As the proverb goes, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Great metaphor, but thanks to a new design trend it may finally be time to take it more literally. Fergus McShane explains.

Over the years we’ve featured a plethora of homes in Spaces with glass floors and doors and huge expanses of glazing. With hindsight it was inevitable that we would ultimately go one step further and embrace the latest design trend – glass wallpaper.

Up-and-coming design company Graftons is currently shaking up the wallpaper world with their new high-end products, which can be found adorning interiors and galleries across the UK.

Obviously, unlike traditional wallpaper, this is not something that can be purchased by the roll. Instead it is designed in sheets of glass that are blasted with the print and then hand-carved to give a textured, layered effect. The sheets come in various sizes and are attached to walls in a way that has more in common with the display of tapestries of old than modern pasted papers.

Colour my World

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Artist Nadia Sparham sees the world as a series of spiky plants and crystalised blades of grass. Square-shaped leaves populate her trees and her hills and fields undulate with graphic swirling lines.

Nadia creates graphic scenes and playful narratives, projecting her own unique way of looking at the world onto ceramic tableware. She works by taking inspiration from her surroundings, collecting motifs and graphics from nature and technology and often finds her muse in the details of something bigger such as an interesting jewellery clasp, the mechanics of a clock or unusual railings.

‘I can find my inspiration anywhere,’ explained Nadia: ‘I love nature, especially the more interesting forms like crystals and coral reef-life and the stuff you see under a microscope. I also love the art of ancient cultures and folk art – what you might call naïve art.’

From Places Few & Far

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Stylist Rohini Wahi makes herself at home at cool and quirky design store Few And Far.

In introductions, Brompton Road store Few and Far has been labelled many things: a ‘concept emporium’, ‘eclectic boutique’, or ‘retail paradise’ to name but a few. However, for me a visit to Few and Far is simply like coming home.

I say this not because my humble home is an ever-changing showcase for carefully-curated treasures from the four corners of the globe, but because this store has soul!

Sitting on a noisy corner of Brompton Road in Knightsbridge, Few and Far is housed in a charming Victorian edifice and encircled by lush greenery; extraordinarily it commands a hushed silence despite its busy surroundings. As soon as you step through its doors you are transported into a different world; the elegant floor-to-ceiling windows (which have been known to display vintage cars and gypsy caravans) let in a light that transports you to a place of comfort and endless possibilities.

and-so-to-bed

Since Keith Barnett started the company some 30 years ago, the And So To Bed design team has brought a special passion and spark to the world of bed design. All our beds are hand made and hand finished by artisans who are devoted to their craft. And as every piece of wood is individual, every bed has its own unique beauty and personality.
